“The safety measures and procedures at the workplace have been effective in keeping the injury and fatality rates low in the company.”

Safety awareness is kept high –  the safety and health policies and regulations of the company are communicated through handbooks available to every employee and contractor involved in plant operations.

We organise regular safety programmes to educate staff and contractors. For example, the Utilities Group conducts a bi-monthly Safety Drive, a series of safety programmes mapped out by each department to drum in the idea of “Safety Begins With Me”. Besides department-sharing sessions on safety activities, the OHS Department also invites external parties to conduct talks on safety and health.

On 30 July 2008, we held a large-scale emergency evacuation drill in the plant which involved the participation of our contractors. Through this major exercise which is held on an annual basis, employees and contractors were able to better appreciate their respective roles and responsibilities in an emergency evacuation situation which would serve them well should an actual situation occur in the plant.

Every year, we celebrate PowerSeraya Safety Day to recognise the efforts that have contributed to our good safety record. Of particular significance is the attainment of the OHSAS 18001 Accreditation which was celebrated at PowerSeraya Safety Day 2008. Certificates and tokens of appreciation were presented to employees for the time and effort they have put in to achieve the OHSAS 18001 Accreditation.
